SAKSHAM VALUES LAB

“Somewhere, Something incredible is waiting to be known” - Carl Sagan
Imagine a world full of creativity, soothing colours & numerous interactive elements with a meaning behind every detail helping you find answers to the most personal questions of life.
If you visit “Saksham” - The World’s First Values Lab at Sarvodaya National Public School, Bangalore designed by Val-Ed Initiatives, it would be one of the things you wished you had in your school days.
The Saksham Values Lab is a specially designed, in-school space dedicated to values inculcation & character building for students.
At the Saksham Values Lab, students grow together inculcating and imbibing human values, social-emotional skills & character traits they will need to thrive in the 21st century. The space exemplifies the philosophy - “Inhale Values and Exhale Character”
As students visit the values lab every week, they enter an alternative world of positivity, self-reflection & realisation. The Saksham Values Lab encourages students to reflect on their mindset, attitudes, behaviours & choices and promotes a collaborative environment where learning is not measured against anyone else but in terms of self-growth.
Saksham Values Lab is set to be a cornerstone of 21st-century progressive schools who are vested in the all-round development of their children & their families. Here are few highlights of various elements of the Saksham Values Lab
The Core Values Wheel

At the heart of every school’s approach to Values & Character are the school’s Core Values that every student is helped to practice.
At Sarvodaya, these Core values are Discipline, Empathy, Respect and Honesty. Educators link &reinforce the core values in every session. Made in shape of inter-connected wheels, it depicts the need to live by these values fully for smooth living.
THE LOTUS BOARD

Replacing the traditional rectangular blackboard, Saksham Values Lab has a multi-shade,lotus shaped board to depict the credo of ‘RISE UP’. The Lotus Board is chalk compatible and makes a beautiful background and capturing medium as majority of the discussion in class happens around it.
THE SPEAK YOUR HEART SPACE

This is a space where students can anonymously seek guidance and assistance from their fellow classmates and educators on any personal or common concerns and questions. Some individuals express better through words than verbally hence this space is also used for confessions, apologies & Thank You Notes.
THE SPEAKING TUBES

Also called the “We Hear You” space, This is commonly used as a creative & fun way of students communicating/answering individually to the educator in class. It is also used when educators want to give feedback individually on any behaviour to a student and when students want to give educators personal feedback without letting the other students know.
THE WORLD OF VALUES MAP

During Saksham Sessions, students learn through lives of people, world incidents, current affairs, ancient & historic examples from all across the globe. The educators highlight countries that they have used as examples in the class bringing in a truly global learning experience.
THE STORY CORNER

“We are all storytellers. We all live in a network of stories. There isn’t a stronger connection between people than storytelling”- Jimmy Smith.
We believe stories are the most impactful medium for an excellent values education. With one of the highest retention rates, it is an unalienable part of our teaching philosophy. Hence, we have dedicated a space where all our storytelling process happens.
Designed in the form of an open book, one side of the book depicts a desired fairy tale and the other side helps children understand how to become deserving of the same.
LEADING LIGHT

Based on the theory of “motivation through appreciation”, this element of the Saksham Values Lab, exhibits the details of students who have displayed appreciable values & character in class, school or outside of it. This is where role models in school worth celebrating & emulating are brought to the notice of others.
THE VALUES METER

The Values Meter helps in tracking the journey & progress of each class. The educator with the help of students often summarizes the values through a pictorial representation, or a defining statement or learning and helps students engrave the values they have learnt on to their heart and memory.

We’ve spent almost 1.5 years in the conceptualising & designing phase taking the help of people & organisations across the globe and across fields like Psychology, Counselling, Spiritual Sciences & Architecture and execution which involves 4 teams and total of 8 people took close to 3 months to complete and we are very happy with the response it has received so far. We shall be closely monitoring the changes we observe in child behaviour before and after attending classes in the lab. The initial results have been positive & encouraging."
